When I saw the trailer for How to Train your Dragon II....I was shocked how handsome Hiccup grew up to be. He looks like he can fit in a boy band. (I mean there is nothing wrong with that.) SO I knew I had to draw a fan art for Hiccup (above). I think I was more excited about staring at his pretty face during the movie than paying attention to the actual story. Anyhow I saw the movie during opening week and it was really good. I also was lucky enough to attend a signing for the movie and got some of the artists at DreamWorks to sign both of my HTTYD I and HTTYD II art books.

Tracing paper is magic. Yes it is. Recently, I was cleaning out my room and stumble upon some left over tracing paper. I decided to sketch on them just for fun. As I was scanning my sketches I notice that it gives out this wonderful texture that you don't get from regular white printing paper. I am using the Canson brand of tracing paper but I think any type of tracing paper would do fine.

Here is an up close shot of the character's face. There are so many amazing texture when you sketch on tracing paper. It gives out that blurry/cloudy effect without any editing programs. If you are ever bored and want to try something different.

Overcoming an artist block is difficult. Sometimes creativity doesn't always come knocking at your door. I have the strongest artist block when I am stressed out. Here are some things I would do break it.

I usually give myself a week or two (sometimes a whole month) break from drawing especially right after a stressful final or event. It's a great time for me to clear my head and just relax. Creativity seems to appear a lot when I am at my most happiest or most relax state of mind. This sounds bad but I go on a netflix binge. I don't recommend it for everyone but it works for me. It gives me ideas or just inspires me. Reading a good book always helps, it's definitely more healthier than binge watching on netflix.

As an artist we like to sit around all day and that's a fact. One thing I found out last year that really works for me is a good exercise. You will be amaze what a 20 minutes jog can do. So that pretty much sums up the things that I would do when I have an artist block. If you have any suggestions or better ways of breaking the block feel free to leave a comment.

In the winter of 2012 DreamWorks released a feature animation movie, Rise of the Guardians. When I first saw the trailer I was so confuse because have you guys seen Jack Frost? He is extremely cute, adorable and good looking. I wonder what made the artists at DreamWorks to make him such a pretty boy? Whatever they were thinking they did it right.

I was ever so lucky to stumble upon the Rise of the Guardians fanart contest, it was held for a short period of time before the movie was released. Above is the fanart I did of Jack Frost for the contest. Soon later I found out I was one of the winners and they sent me an autographed art book. That was literally the most exciting part of 2012 for me. I was also able to collect more autographs from the artists that work on the movie at a signing event.

Hey everyone! Recently I started to sketch again. I forgot how wonderful it feels to just let my pencil glide back and forth onto a blank page. I can just mindlessly let my creativity take me to where it wants to take me. A wonderful feeling that I forgot about.

I was actually afraid to keep a sketchbook...again. I haven't kept one for years and that is horrible because I'm an artist. I have this mentality where I want all my drawings to be perfect. Lets face it that is not going to happen. For the longest time I couldn't because I am always surrounded by extremely talented artists. They were making perfect drawings confidently on every page of their sketchbook. I have to constantly remind myself that they were once like me. Making bad drawings over thousands of times in order to get to the level they are at today.

I knew that it's a fact but I ignored it. With time comes wisdom and eventually I got over it. I fearlessly started to sketch in my new sketchbook.

All the good, the bad and the ugly.
